Flightmaster Trophy 2014

Fightmaster Trophy 2014

This year’s event was staged at Sterling Golf Club in Scotland from 11th – 13th Sept’. Europe represented by members from the Society of One Armed Golfers teeing up as favourites, having retained the trophy in 2012. For the first morning foursomes, team Captain David Bailey put out his strongest pairings and it could not have went any better with the home side winning four from four. For the afternoon fourballs Brendan Swan paired up with fellow Irishman Cian Arthurs in match 1. The North American players needing to restore some pride would prove a sterner test for session 2. Europe got off to the perfect start with Brendan and Cian delivering a 2&1 victory but by day’s end Europe had to settle for a share of the afternoon spoils but quite content ending the first day’s play with a 6-2 lead.

With all European players having played on day one the mood in the camp going into day two was one of anticipation. In match 1 Brendan was paired with European No 1 player Reinard Schuhknecht and they duly obliged in their foursomes with the first point and a 5&3 win which was followed by another 3 points leaving Europe in a commanding 10-2 lead going into the fourballs. Europe could now secure retention of the Trophy if they gained 4 points in the afternoon but just came up short with 3  leaving the final day singles only requiring 1 ½ points for overall victory.
Due to fog, Singles morning started with a two hour delay and the organisers had to opt for a two tee start which meant all matches were on the course within the first hour. With the par three fourteenth beside the clubhouse it was here that the second groups started and at match No 9 Brendan Swan vs. Carson Novins was fourth match on the course. Brendan drained a thirty foot putt for two which set the tone for the match with putting the key! The first point was secured by Reinard and all that was left was who would gain the next ½ point for victory. With all players on the course so quickly it meant that any one of 5 matches could be the winning point and it was later confirmed that Brendan’s putt on the ninth green for a 5&4 win proved to be the one that clinched the trophy.

Europe had set out on day one with a goal to win each session and by the time the final match reached the 18th green that goal was achieved and bettering there winning score from 2012 with a resounding 21pts to 7pts victory.
This was very much a team performance similar to 2012 with the roles of Captain David Bailey and Mary Fahy being switched but still keeping the same continuity. On a personal note Brendan was very happy with his week having been a captain’s pick the pressure to perform being that bit sweeter when winning 3 from 3 and extra special with the putt that secured the trophy. Roll on 2016.
